SUMMARY:Senior Walk: Hamilton Cemetery - Learn About Lichen
DESCRIPTION:Learn about Lichen\nDate: Thursday\, March 5\nTime: 10am – 11:30am\nLocation: Dundurn Castle\, 610 York Blvd\, Hamilton\nSponsors: Iroquoia-Bruce Trail\, Hamilton Conservation Authority\, Hamilton Aging in Community\n\nWalk Type: Gentle pace over mostly flat grass or snow-covered area. 2-3 km. \nJoin Carolyn Zanchetta\, HNC Stewardship & Education Coordinator on a gentle walk around Hamilton Cemetery. Discover the unique world of lichen and what it can tell us about air quality. Often undetected and unassuming\, lichen can be found growing anywhere. Throughout Hamilton we can see crustose lichen coating park benches\, colourful foliose lichen peeling up off tree trunks\, squamulose lichen at the base of an old tree\, or even fruiticose lichen stretching off the branches. As they are sensitive to pollutants\, they can also tell us a lot about the air quality where they grow\, or simply by their presence or absence. We’ll look for these often overlooked organisms on Hamilton Cemetery stones and trees. \nMeet at Dundurn Castle parking lot by the stop lights at far end.  Bring snacks and water and dress warm as we’ll be making several stops to look at lichen.  Might be some mud or icy so wear good boots and bring icers and poles if you have them.  Optional stop after for coffee. \nContact:  Bron at brontreg@cogeco.ca or 905-334-4013 (with text for day of hike) for more information. Cancelled in inclement weather.

SUMMARY:Senior Walks
DESCRIPTION:A new program to provide seniors with opportunities to meet to enjoy outdoor exercise\, to learn about local history and natural environments\, and to encounter new people with similar interests.\nSponsors: Iroquoia Bruce Trail Conservancy\, Hamilton Conservation Area\, \n                     & Hamilton Aging in Community \n  \nDate: Thursday\, Oct. 17\, 10:00am \nMeeting Place: Confederation Park at The Sandbox Beach Bar\, 680 Waterfront Trail. \ncaEnter through the Confederation Park gates and follow the signs to “Beaches Grill”\, which have not yet been changed to the current name of “The Sandbox Beach Bar” where there is ample parking and public washrooms. SUMMARY:Encouraging Social Inclusion: Faith Communities as Neighbourhood Hubs
DESCRIPTION:Fall 2019 Learning Series \nLed by Pat Spadafora\, Project Manager – Hamilton Seniors Isolation Impact Plan (HSIIP) \nThis presentation is for faith community leaders and others interested in social inclusion. \nFaith communities are natural gathering places for people of all ages. \nSince 2005 I have worked to develop a community hub model for Grace Lutheran Church which has greatly benefited the wider community and ourselves. You could already be engaged in a community hub model or may not know about this yet. Either way\, Pat’s insights\, learning about the model Grace Lutheran Church has used and having the opportunity for discussion\, will benefit all leaders from all faith communities. \nIn addition to sharing key learnings from the 3-year Hamilton Seniors Isolation Impact Plan project\, Pat Spadafora will engage participants in a conversation about the role of faith communities as neighbourhood hubs for supporting not only older adults who are experiencing social isolation but for individuals of all ages. \nWe have invited Pat Spadafora\, Project Manager for the Hamilton Seniors Isolation Impact Plan\, to speak with us on how our locations can become Neighbourhood Hubs in our local communities. \nAs the founder and former Director of the Centre for Elder Research\, an applied research Centre of Excellence at Sheridan College in Oakville and Kaleidoscope Consulting\, Pat brings much experience and insight around the issues seniors face in our faith communities and the wider community. \nYou can read more about Pat Spadafora on her website www.kaleidoscopeconsulting.net. \n  \n  \nPlease RSVP by Wednesday\, September 25th to reserve your spot for supper and please let us know of any dietary concerns. \n905-527-0877 or info.glchamilton@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Enhancing access to quality long-term care services for older LGBTQ persons
DESCRIPTION:Gilbrea Centre for Studies on Aging Seminar Series\nat McMaster University\n  \nAlisa Grigorovich will be speaking about: \nOlder lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, trans and queer-identified (LGBTQ) adults\, like the general older adult population\, would prefer to age in place in their community for as long as possible. However\, while there is growing attention to later life sexualities in empirical literature and health professional education\, gaps remain in knowledge regarding older LGBTQ adults living with chronic illness/disabilities in Canada. Drawing on recent research with this population\, Alisa Grigorovich will explore their care experiences and needs and identify the importance of fostering home care providers’ competency in providing affirming and respectful care. She will argue for the need to engage in arts-based and visual methods for education and knowledge translation in this regard\, and present an example of the development of such an initiative\, called ‘Out at Home.’

SUMMARY:The Contribution of Literary Scholarship to Gerontology
DESCRIPTION:Join Marlene Goldman on September 14th\, when she presents \n“The Contribution of Literary Scholarship to Gerontology”. \n \nSeminar will be held at L.R. Wilson Hall | Main Campus in Room 1003\n  \nIn Marlene Goldman’s ‘The Contribution of Literary Scholarship to Gerontology” she argues that novelists\, poets\, and dramatists play a profound role in any period’s understandings of illness and disease. In the case of late-onset dementia and Alzheimer’s disease\, language —specifically\, clusters of familiar metaphors and literary genres such as tragedy and the Gothic — constitute the central medium for the ongoing interplay between biology and culture. \nThe idea that fiction\, more than medicine\, is responsible for shaping our concepts of disease is central to her book\, Forgotten: Age-Related Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease in Canada and to her film Piano Lessons\, an adaptation of Alice Munro’s story InSight of the Lake from her recent collection Dear Life (2012). \nProfessor Goldman’s training in literary studies enables her to step back from authoritative and popular narratives about aging and age-related diseases\, to consider how they are narratively constructed\, whose interests they serve\, and\, on occasion to challenge their Gothic and apocalyptic pronouncements. \n  \n \nThe Gilbrea Centre 2018 / 2019 Seminar Series\nThis series creates opportunities for the exchange of ideas and stimulates discussion amongst associate researchers\, graduate and undergraduate students\, community members\, and older people. \nThis year we will be hosting several seminars with various research groups and networks to explore this year’s chosen research theme; “Visual Methods and Knowledge Exchange” with a focus on aging. \nMarlene Goldman is the first speaker we will be hosting as part of this series. \n  \nSpaces are available for this free seminar!\nMore information at http://gilbrea.mcmaster.ca/events or contact gilbrea@mcmaster.ca
