By Ellen Ryan, co-leader of Hamilton Aging in Community

The Senior’s Advisory Committee of Hamilton recently published Housing Options for Older Adults in Hamilton – 2024

This hot-off-the press Resource Guide provides important information about housing and housing alternatives such as Home Sharing for seniors in Hamilton. It is meant to help individuals stay in their own homes as long as they are able. Tthen, as circumstances change, help them to gather as much information as possible to better understand options and assist with decisions about future housing.

Contents include Housing Search checklists to help a person or couple to match current and future needs with housing locations and features (eg. stairs, accessibility, garden areas, convenience of medical services and amenities such as shopping).

A brief emergency housing section provides links such as the Housing Help Centre in Hamilton.

Housing Alternatives are grouped in terms of Ownership Options (along with financial considerations), Rental Options, and Options with Seniors Services. Charts with Benefits and Drawbacks of each option can facilitate productive conversations to guide a housing search.

For those choosing to remain in the home, the guide concludes with information about senior-appropriate renovations and tips to keep your home safe.

Spread the word about this resource for planning where to live as we age.
